14 H. for a Dressage Horse?

Short? I know…now just read this first until you go answering, please.

Lightning is a 14.3 hands, quarter horse. Full quarter horse. Both of her parents bloodlines are for western pleasure&speed. Well I recently found out over my years of working with this amazing horse, that she suceeds in English Pleasure. Her trot is too fast for western pleasure and she just doesnt look right when she lopes. In english, she listens 100% and gives her 100% and is always doing her best. Strange thing is, is that they did this with her father, and he does WONDERFUL in english. Though she is VERY fast for speed and does awesome in that, we all agreed that she is an english horse. So we went with it…

Now…to the dressage part.
Lightning has soooo much potential. She’s only 5 years(6 in feb.)…she learns FAST. She picked up her headset in two days! Just last week, we had a classical song on with just orchestra music and it got really fast, and we were watching Lightning in the pasture, and she was litterly dancing to it. She did the criss cross with her legs and cantered to fast parts. It was just amazing. Talking with my husband, he thinks we should teach her dressage…we taught other horses dressaged&suceeded with them. So I’m up for teaching Lightning because i’m almost positive she’d be up for it also.

Knowing dressage, I know they are mostly throughbreds (tall)….but I say "Who Cares!!!" If you see enough potential in your horse to do something, DO IT! It doesnt matter what others say because your having fun!

What do you think about this?

As long as you’re not hoping to go to the Grand Prix, go for it. Almost any breed can compete at lower levels, but you won’t see any quarter horses at the very top.

Have fun though, she sounds great :)
