Can You Explain the Dressage Levels and the Level of Riding Required for Each Level Please?
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could demystify the dressage levels for me please. I know that they begin with preliminary followed by Novice, Elementary, Medium, Open Medium through to Grand Prix.
could you tell me what you and your horse need to be able to do for each level before you can progress to the next, and also anything else you think might be helpful to know would be great too, thanks!

The quality of your riding and how your horse goes is judged in dressage. You do not need to perform to a higher standard, the higher the level, you just need to keep the good standard but perform harder moves.
If you are planning on doing dressage then I would start at Preliminary. Get your horse working in an outline properly from behind. Get your horse moving actively but not rushed and bending correctly. Read your comments from the judges and use these to improve. When you get a score above 60% you are ready to move upwards, and keep doing this. As you get to higher levels you might need to learn new moves though. Prelim is often just circles but Grand Prix level can involve piaffe and passage ect. which you would have to learn before hand obviously. Good luck.
