Horse All of a Sudden Always Pees When I Ride?? and Other Problems..?

I have a 14yr old QH gelding 14.3 hands. I do Dressage with him so i have a dressage saddle. When i get on him on my way riding to the arena he ALWAYS has to stop to take a pee..we tried a kidney flush (just in case) but that didnt help either..whats up with him? what can i do? i dont wiegh alot either.

Also, over a long period of time he began to pick up the wrong leads all the time, than he would break down to the trot. This year during cantering he woud dart in the oppoiste direction in which we were going. So we thought he was in pain..had 2 chiropacters out and nothing rlly helped! we had the vet and she said to get his hocks injected for arthritis. So we did. He is still doing it ( not as often) is it now just a attuide problem? cause when he was hurting we let him get away with alot and his artitis is mild..plz help! thank you :)

What you describe sounds to me like habits and not so much symptoms of anything. It sounds like you have been trying to first rule out the medical, which is a good thing.
I would not be worried about the peeing. It will make him more comfortable when you ride.
I have a gelding who pees every time I come out to feed him, like he is making room for supper.
My daughter’s gelding goes before every show starts. So I don’t think I would worry about that.
As for the leads and darting, it sounds like a little reschooling would help. Yes, he could have learned that misbehaving worked when he was sore, so why not try it again now? I would enlist the help of someone for some lessons for both you and your horse. You may actually be miscuing him, and if so, a lesson or two may clear the lead problem up and a few more may help you regain control so he doesn’t dart and you know what to do to prevent it.
    Hope that helped.

The horse might be too old for competition. Horse years are like 5 to 1 human years. If you think kicking a confused horse into performing better is frustrating, try kicking a dead horse! Lemme tell you, you’l get nowhere. Get him to a nice pasture, and ride him gently taking long breaks. Be nice to your old horsey.

Has his sheath been cleaned? There could be beans or buildup that’s bothering him. You can use ivory soap and cotton (rip the cotton apart and soak it) Use gloves. Most horses aren’t good with sheath cleaning, even the most gentle ones so if you can give him a sedative, relaxer. We use a vet given product called Ace. If it seems to difficult just have the vet do it.

Don’t worry about the urine issue.. He probably just is making himself comfortable. Just stand up in your stirrups and let him go.

The swerving issue sounds like a bad habit. Whenever he does that do TIGHT TIGHT circles in the direction you want to go, this will get him paying attention. Continue to do that until he stops doing it.

    Good luck!

As long as he doesn’t stop to pee while you’re out in the arena riding I don’t really see a problem. He’s probably just emptying himself so it’s more comfortable for him to work.
