How Do I Size a Dressage Saddle Girth for My Horse?
I have a 48" girth now for simple trail riding… but how does that translate to a close contact saddle girth?

It may seem really simple, but sometimes simple works best, right? Since the girth ‘number’ translates directly to inches, this is what I do:
Put your existing saddle and saddle pad on your horse. Tie a piece of string to the middle hole of one of your girth leathers and let it hang down to the ground. From the opposite side of the horse, grab the string, pull it snug to the correct position under the ‘belly’ and then hold the string to the middle of the girth leathers on this side. Cut the string, and then, viola! You have a girth length. Cut the string right at the not that you tied at first and now you have an exact measurement. Use a tape measure or any other simple measure and then you have your starting point.
One thing to note – if you are using a fleece girth, you may want to add an inch or two (depending on how ‘fluffy’ it is) to compensate for the added thickness and comfort.
