How Do You Teach a Horse Passage?

Hi all, just a curiosity question here.

I was just wondering what are the tips and methods for teaching a horse the Passage?

I am having dressage lessons at the mo but we are not that advanced yet and I am sure that my trainer will help me when we get there but, like I said just out of curiosity I have always wondered how you would train a horse to do this?

Thanks heaps in advance. :-)

Passage training is usually begun as piaffe in-hand (on the ground), with the reins over the horse’s neck (as if you were going to get on) and a dressage whip. The trainer stands at the horse’s shoulder and taps the hock of the horse lightly until the horse raises that leg in the air for a few seconds. The trainer then alternates legs until the horse responds to the whip by instantly lifting its leg. The trainer doesn’t allow the horse to lean on the forehand and uses the bit to keep weight on the hindquarters. The training continues under saddle with the rider applying leg, maintaining carriage, and with a trainer on the ground with the whip, reinforcing previous training.

**Many youtube videos and the like have horses trotting with high knees and calling it passage. Training a horse to jig or trot with high knee action is not a correct passage, which begins in the hind end, hence the whip exercise. Also, passage/piaffe shouldn’t be done in very young horses, like you see in some youtube videos. Beware the internet and remember always ride back to front!
