I’ll list the commands up to about advanced novice so you can test your horse, I do recommend you get in touch with a trainer to correct your aids and to explain the basics of dressage, this is pretty important as it’s hard to know what you want the horse to do if you don’t know what it looks like or the theory behind it.
English commands paces
-Walk: squeeze both legs
-Trot(from halt or walk): squeeze with both legs and give a little heal
-Canter(from halt, walk or trot): squeeze inside leg by the girth, outside leg stroke from the girth and back.
-Half-halt(used to warn the horse/collect the horse): tighten your bum and back muscles and slight tightening on the rein
-Flying change of canter(change of leading leg in the canter): half-halt, straighten the horse, give the opposite leg command for canter, when change has occurred slightly turn the head to the side of the leading leg for balance.
English lateral work commands(listen in order of difficulty):
-Turn on the forehand(horses back end turns around the stationary front): halt, indicate direction of turn(inside rein), use outside rein to keep the halt, outside leg just behind the girth, nudge with heal(moving the back round).
-Leg-yielding(horse moves sideways and forward crossing front and back legs, looking in the opposite direction of travel, best done from the centerline to the track): inside leg on or just behind the girth, heal nudging(moving the backend sideways), outside leg keeps the forward momentum and straightness. Inside rein asks for slight bend, outside rein open to indicate direction.
-Shoulder in(the slightly bending the front off the track, while back contuse on the track) 10m circle keeping the bend as you return to the track, outside rain stops the horse moving off the track and over bending, inside rein keeps bend, inside leg on the girth, heal nudging, outside leg behind the girth holding the back end in place.
-Half-pass(leg yielding expt the horse it bent in the direction of travel) side rein asks for bend and is open in direction of travel, ask shoulder off the track(like in shoulder in), outside rain prevents the horse from moving too much forward and controls the extent of the bend, outside leg behind the girth, heal nudging(moving the back end sideways), inside leg on the girth controlling implosion.
-Pirouette(front end moves around the stationary back): half-halt, outside rein controls speed and stops the horse moving forward, inside rein controls bend and is open in the direction of travel. Outside leg behind the girth keeping the backend in place, inside leg by the girth.
I don’t recommend you try any of the lateral movements in any other pace than walk, at least not til you have a trainer to correct you.
