Partboarding?

Someone is interested in partboarding my horse.

He’s a nine year old Hanoverian. Very quiet, great for learning on/excellent work ethic. In dressage training, he’s got solid training level training and progressing well. Hacks out nicely. Has been shown before.

The facilities he’s at has an indoor arena, outdoor arenas, about 40 acres available for hacking, access to dressage coach, etc.

The person who wishes to partboard him is only wanting to ride about 2-3 times a week. How much would you charge for something like this? Also, I assume I need her to sign some sort of contract? Any other information would be appreciated :-)

    I don’t know about charging her for the use of the horse. I would prefer a contract along the lines of splitting the monthly boarding fees, feed bills, vet bills, farrier visits, etc. If she goes halves in those areas, she will be more than paying her share. You need to determine a schedule to share feeding, grooming, and mucking out on a daily basis. Also, an injury waiver document is an absolute must. Hope this helps.

    You mean like a lease? The price you should charge is entirely up to you, but I would guess a reasonable price per month would be somewhere between 200 and 300 dollars. I was leasing my horse monthly for 250. That included her riding 2-3 times a week. I would diffidently write up some sort of contract for liability reasons. You can look online to for contracts already made up, or find someone who can help you with that like a notary. Good luck.

    I’m half-leasing a horse. I’m responsible for half the boarding, farrier costs, and vaccinations. I get to ride 3 times a week. This doesn’t include lessons though. I have to have my own saddle, but the rest of the owner’s tack I’m allowed to use.

    I used to partboard (we called it shareboarding) when I was in high school for quite a few years. The way we always worked it was that we split the board and farrier bills in half. Vet bills were paid for by the owner. I also used my own saddle, but I used the owners bridle, girth, brushes, etc and rode 2-3 times per week. Again, I did this for a long time and it seemed to work well on both ends. As long as it is someone who you are comfortable with riding your horse and using any of your tack then I would say you should be good to go :) Good luck!
